Weight Loss And God

By Phil Proctor

Today we all recognize that there is a very real connection between wellness and weight loss, but we understand far less about how God relates to weight loss.

The Bible makes it rather clear that gluttony, or obesity as we would call it today, is not God’s will. The reason it is not God’s will is because he desires us to be well. Obesity appears to be a precursor to many degenerative diseases. The good news is that anything that God wills us to do He will help us accomplish! It is important to realize that God loves you just like you are, but he does not want to leave you there.

Science today tends to discredit the Bible account of creation. The laws that they tend to call natural laws are in reality God’s laws which He established at creation. When we violate natural laws we can expect there to be natural consequences. For example if you step off a cliff you’re going to fall. Science wants us to believe that we are our own gods and that we are capable of solving all our own problems. The reality is that that is just plain not true.

Science has tinkered with our food. Much of the food that we eat today has been highly processed. The processing has removed many nutrients and added several chemicals to our diet. The nutrients that have been removed and the chemicals that have been added are to increase shelf life. Current research is showing us that many of these added chemicals can also be adding pounds. Many of these added chemicals are what we would call xenobiotic, or foreign to life. The food that God designed is probiotic, or supports life.

You need to understand that the word sin is an old archery term which implies by how far you missed the mark by. The first ring form the middle was called sin one. The second ring out from the middle, was called sin two. From day one sin has been separation from God. The whole purpose of His dying on the cross is to remove that separation and bring us back to Him. It is God’s plan that through obedience to his natural laws you can achieve optimal health. This would also include optimal weight. The Bible tells us that apart from Christ we can do nothing. It says in Philippians 4:13 “That we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” That does not exclude weight loss.

Prayer and Bible study without obedience is much like walking off the cliff and thinking you will not fall. When we pray we should ask that God will speak to us through his Word and reveal to us the reason we are overweight, not just ask that He will take the weight away. I can promise you that He will help you to the degree to which you will obey his leading.

If you have tried many of the world’s fancy diets and have not been as successful as you would of liked. I invite you to try God. The Bible says in 3 John 1:2 “beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.”
